This week, graduate students enrolled in PhD programs at Duke University will receive ballots in the mail to vote on whether to form a labor union. If more students vote for the union than against, they’ll become the first recognized graduate student union in the South.

UNC-Chapel Hill is announcing a new financial aid program to offer free tuition to incoming undergraduate students from North Carolina whose families make less than $80,000 a year.

In a 6-3 decision, the court struck down admissions plans at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, the nation’s oldest private and public colleges, respectively.

Andrew Brennen graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2019. When he was a student at the university, he and several other students of color were permitted to become a party to the case on the same side as UNC. The students provided testimony on the value of a diverse campus.

It's a bold and broad financial aid commitment — any undergraduate student from NC or SC admitted to Duke whose household income is $150,000 or less will not have to pay tuition. Those whose family income is $65,000 or less will receive a full ride, including tuition, housing and meals – all without student loans.

The new policy gives UNC System President Peter Hans a greater role in search committees for chancellors who lead public universities in North Carolina.

After many years of steady growth, 12 of the 16 universities in the UNC System saw their student populations decline this past fall. As enrollment shrinks, so will their budgets.

North Carolina high schools have a new tool from the National Student Clearinghouse to track whether their graduates go to college and ultimately earn a degree.

"She will be remembered as one of the giants of American higher education," said Peter Hans, current UNC System president and Board of Governors member, during Broad's tenure.

Cooper announced the creation of the panel in early November, saying the Republican majority in the General Assembly has too much power over the UNC system's 17 institutions.
