North Carolina will get about $14 million of the nearly $800 million the federal government is giving out to update transit systems across the country. The grants are part of the US Department of Transportation's "State of Good Repair and Bus Livability" effort.
DOT Secretary Ray Lahood says the grants will have a transformative effect.
Ray LaHood: These are projects that will make a real difference in people's lives. They're replacing old buses with new technology that will reduce fuel and maintenance costs and improving access to transportation by renovating outdated facilities.
The largest project being funded in North Carolina is an $8 million transit center planned for Fayetteville. Charlotte, home to the Democratic Convention, gets $4 million to update its bus fleet. No projects in the Triangle or Triad were awarded funding.
