Many of the 190 animals seized from a Chatham County property last month will soon be available for adoption. Beyond dogs and cats, authorities and animal welfare agencies rescued goats, ducks, chickens, horses, cows and a hog.

Leigh Ann Garrard, Director of , said it took months to coordinate with partner agencies to find places for the various species.

"You do have to think, 'Where am I going to put, you know, 130 cats,' or, 'Where are we going to place 11 horses?'" Garrard said. "You do have to plan for the housing of those animals, which sometimes can be difficult, because not all facilities have access to livestock areas."

Some cats and dogs will go to the Chatham County Animal Services shelter for placement. The Humane Society of the United States will work with several emergency placement partners in the region to handle continued medical care, healing and adoption for the rest of the rescued animals.

"We want to make sure that in our seizure process every animal is going to the best place it possibly can for care and treatment, " Garrard said. "Our goal is to get them healthy and placed for adoption as soon as possible into a permanent home, and get them some regularity again."

The following agencies will have some of the rescued animals for adoption:

  • Chatham County Animal Shelter,
  • Chatham Animal Rescue & Education (CARE), Pittsboro, NC,
  • Safe Haven for Cats, Raleigh, NC
  • SPCA of Wake County,
  • Red Dog Farm, Greensboro, NC, dogs and cows,
  • Horse Helpers of the High Country, Boone, NC, horses, pig and goat,
  • Carolina Waterfowl Rescue, Indian Trail, NC, poultry only,
  • Norfolk SPCA, Norfolk, VA,
  • Virginia Beach SPCA, Virginia Beach, VA,
  • Angels of Assisi, Roanoke VA,
  • Lost Dog and Cat Rescue, Arlington VA
  • Washington Animal Rescue League, Washington DC

Each organization will have its own application form and requirements.
