The current longest-serving North Carolina House member is back at her former position leading a prominent committee. Republican Rep. Julia Howard of Davie County was elevated Wednesday by Speaker Tim Moore to a senior chair position on the House Finance Committee. This came more than three years after Moore and other GOP chamber leaders took the post away from Howard during a dispute over tax legislation.

Rep. Donnie Loftis of Gaston County said he was just outside the U.S. Capitol during the insurrection in January. Loftis has said he had 鈥渮ero involvement in the rioting鈥� and condemned how others went inside. At least one Democrat said Loftis' rally participation crossed the line.

The North Carolina House has approved legislation barring abortion providers from performing the procedure if a woman鈥檚 decision centered on the unborn child鈥檚 race or a Down syndrome diagnosis. Thursday's vote came after nearly after an hour of impassioned debate.
