Irene Deadline Approaching

The deadline approaches for victims of Hurricane Irene to file flood insurance claims. Residents who experienced damage have until Wednesday to send a damage report to insurers that issued a National Flood Insurance Policy. This week's deadline is a 30-day extension of the original October cutoff. FEMA spokesman Jeff Welsh says that was in response to residents who were not satisfied with inspections immediately after Hurricane Irene.

Jeff Welsh: "We expanded the hotline operation that we set up here in the joint field office so that anyone who wanted their flood damage inspection done over could call that number and NFIP would contact the insurer and ask them to do a reinspection."

Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin has asked FEMA to extend the deadline at least two more weeks. Goodwin says some residents were not aware of this week's deadline.
