The EPA proposed sweeping changes to the country's carbon emission regulations. The coal is to cut carbon pollution by 30% by 2030 - relying more heavily on renewable energy sources to generate electricity.

"We are one of the leaders in installation and new solar across the country," Monast notes. "We were investing heavily in energy efficiency anyway. So because we've been taking these steps for quite some time, I think North Carolina's already on a trajectory to make compliance easier than it would be in some other states that had not taken early action."
