Former lieutenant governor Walter Dalton waits for approval from the state Board of Community Colleges to become a community college president. The members of the Board of Trustees chose Dalton last week to be the school's fifth president. Dalton would succeed Myra Johnson who has been president of ICC for the past six years. Dalton was one of a half-dozen finalists for the position. School spokesman Mike Gavin says Dalton's history with the college could have been a factor in his selection.
"Walter was a trustee here at the college before he was a state senator," Gavin said. " He was the chair of our board of trustees years and years ago in the early 90's. So certainly Walter was not an unknown but he certainly drew some attention that maybe some of the others did not."
Dalton grew up in the western North Carolina region where Isothermal is located. The trustees' selection has to be approved at the meeting next month. Dalton is scheduled to assume the school's president May 1st.
