's family history plays a significant role in his musical output. The son of a folklorist, curator and photographer spent his childhood listening to old bluesmen and Native American artists his father was recording.

Fussell traveled from his native Georgia to California and Mississippi, winding up in Durham where he now lives. Along the way he learned and collected songs that show up on his new record .

"..for me, the process has to be connecting with something emotionally and then drawing out certain aspects..singing it from a place that feels real to me rather than me trying to emulate someone else."
