Originally from Los Angeles but now based in New York, Lawrence Grey is on the cusp of becoming the next phenomenon in "." Proximal Records, a new label devoted to covering the electronic sounds of Los Angeles, just released his single "Peaches for the Baby" as part of a compilation featuring fellow beatmakers TOKiMONSTA, Take and Dam Funk. Though still relatively unknown -- his MySpace page has about 1,200 views -- Grey's ability to warp tempos and link grooves suggests that his time in the shade will be short-lived.
The song opens with a stabbing organ line that serves as the template for a track that's constantly shifting. Grey introduces rhythms for just long enough to set a foot tapping, before shifting to another infectious feel running parallel to the previous idea. As the song progresses, new elements are sprinkled atop staggering bars, until the original riff is recapped at the song's conclusion. It's a structure that'll catch listeners off guard, but because of the accessibility of the beats, it never keeps them off balance.
